GAIL, AM Green partner for 2.5GW of hybrid solar PV and wind projects in India

The state-owned Indian energy company GAIL has entered into a partnership with green gases producer AM Green (AMG) to collaboratively investigate the potential establishment of 2.5GW hybrid solar PV and wind projects throughout India.

Through the formalization of a memorandum of understanding (MoU), both entities have outlined plans to undertake studies regarding the sustained supply of around 350,000 metric tonnes per annum of carbon dioxide (CO2) generated by GAIL in its gas processing facilities.

GAIL stated that this CO2 would be utilized for the production of eMethanol, a sustainable fuel that contributes to carbon emission reduction and promotes a circular economy. Moreover, GAIL will have the opportunity to invest in the envisioned eMethanol project, fostering a strategic partnership that aligns with the shared objectives of both companies in advancing sustainable energy solutions.

According to Rajeev Singhal, GAIL’s director of business development, the development of renewable energy generation projects will play a crucial role in decreasing India’s carbon footprint by facilitating the production of environmentally friendly gases.

“Enabling the provision of CO2 for eMethanol production reflects our proactive stance in reducing carbon emissions and fostering the development of alternative fuels. The advancement of renewable energy projects will contribute to lowering the country’s carbon footprint and propelling India’s shift towards a more environmentally friendly energy framework. The collaboration between GAIL and AMG is poised to enhance technological innovation in India, while also advocating for economic growth and environmental sustainability,” stated Singhal.

AM Green, a subsidiary of the Indian renewable energy company Greenko Group, has ambitious plans to emerge as “one of the most competitive producers of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other sustainable molecules globally.” The company has already targeted the production of five million tonnes per annum of green ammonia by 2030, which equates to approximately one million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen.

The firms announced that the hybrid solar PV and wind initiatives, in conjunction with Greenko’s forthcoming pumped hydro energy storage ventures amounting to 3.3GW, are positioned to deliver uninterrupted power to end users, including the planned eMethanol project.

Mahesh Kolli, the group president of AM Green, emphasized that the agreement will support India’s goal to emerge as a significant exporter of sustainable molecules for industrial decarbonization.

“This collaboration showcases AM Green’s growing role as a global provider of clean energy transition solutions, while also supporting India’s aspiration to become a supplier of dependable, sustainable, and cost-effective green molecules and their by-products, thereby hastening global industrial decarbonization. The manufacturing of green methanol will also aid in decarbonizing challenging sectors such as shipping, steel, cement, and others,” Kolli stated.
