EDF Renewables places multi-year order for up to 7 GW of Canadian Solar modules

Canadian Solar Inc. and EDF Renewables North America have entered into a multi-year agreement for module supply. Under the terms of the agreement, Canadian Solar will supply up to 7 GW of high-efficiency N-type TOPCon solar modules manufactured at the company’s new facility in Mesquite, Texas.

Between 2024 and 2030, Canadian Solar is set to supply EDF Renewables in the United States with its latest high-efficiency N-Type TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) solar modules. These TOPCon modules will further Canadian Solar’s commitment to delivering optimal returns on investment for its clientele. With conversion efficiencies reaching up to 22.5%, a minimal temperature coefficient of -0.30%/degrees C, reduced Light Induced Degradation (LID) leading to lower power degradation, and enhanced bifaciality compared to Mono-PERC modules, these new modules promise increased energy generation for users.

During the summer months, Canadian Solar revealed plans to inject more than $250 million into a cutting-edge solar photovoltaic module facility located in Mesquite, Texas. Upon reaching full capacity, the factory is projected to yield 5 GW annually and generate around 1,500 skilled employment opportunities. Operations are anticipated to commence in the fourth quarter of 2023.

“The agreement for module supply underscores our dedication to local sourcing and marks a significant advancement for EDF Renewables, facilitating the attainment of crucial project milestones and the implementation of a timeline for our extensive solar project portfolio,” stated Tristan Grimbert, the President and CEO of EDF Renewables. He emphasized that the ability to develop and construct solar projects using domestically manufactured solar modules in the United States aligns with IRA regulations, enabling the company to “mitigate risks associated with trade uncertainties and fluctuations in the supply chain.”

“This agreement exemplifies the robust relationship and extensive track record of collaboration between our two organizations on a global scale, spanning the U.S. and Brazil,” Qu remarked. “We are enthusiastic about partnering with EDF Renewables North America to deliver a consistent stream of clean and dependable solar energy to the U.S. market, supported by domestically produced solar modules, in alignment with the Inflation Reduction Act.”
