DCO Energy Secures $122M Solar Contract for Jersey City Schools

DCO Energy, a prominent developer based in New Jersey, has recently concluded a contract worth $122 million for an energy savings improvement program (ESIP) aimed at supporting and advancing the renewable future of Jersey City Public Schools. As the third largest public school district in New Jersey, this initiative holds immense significance for the region’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy development.

This agreement represents a groundbreaking milestone as the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) approves the largest-ever Energy Savings Improvement Program (ESIP). The program will revolutionize the Jersey City Public School District, which comprises 44 schools spanning an impressive 5.5 million square feet. Through this initiative, the district will undergo substantial renovations and enhancements, including the installation of state-of-the-art solar energy technologies.

With the implementation of solar energy systems, the district is poised to reap the rewards of green energy. A total of 31 schools within the district will be equipped with solar panels, generating an impressive amount of nearly 11 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity. This substantial increase in solar energy production will significantly enhance the district’s overall energy portfolio. As a result of this remarkable technological advancement, the district’s green footprint will expand, enabling it to generate 42% of its power on-site through solar energy.

Dr. Norma Fernandez, the superintendent of Jersey City Public Schools, expressed the significance of the project, stating, “This endeavor exemplifies our commitment to sustainability and the well-being of our students and staff. Creating a green, safe, and healthy learning environment is our top priority. By installing advanced HVAC equipment and solar panels, we will greatly enhance indoor air quality, minimize emissions, and allocate funds towards educational programs. This initiative will not only improve the overall quality of classrooms but also contribute to a better educational experience for our students.”
