Bayer Initiates Dual Coastal Solar Projects

Solar Projects

Bayer, a leading healthcare and agriculture company, has recently completed the installation of two solar arrays at its facilities located in New Jersey and California. These solar arrays serve as a sustainable energy solution, demonstrating Bayer’s commitment to environmental stewardship and renewable energy adoption.

Bayer’s vegetable research and development site in Woodland, California, has recently implemented a state-of-the-art solar array installation. This innovative solution is designed to meet 70% of the site’s electrical energy demand, marking a significant step towards sustainable and self-sufficient operations. By harnessing the power of solar energy, Bayer is reducing its reliance on traditional electricity sources and making substantial progress in its commitment to environmental responsibility.

Enrique Wehlen, the Head of Sustainability, Safety, Health, and Environment (SSHE) for North America at Bayer, proudly announced that the Woodland site has become the most solar-powered operation within Bayer worldwide, thanks to this recent installation. This achievement highlights Bayer’s dedication to sustainable practices and reinforces their position as a leader in renewable energy adoption within the company.

Following the successful completion of a solar installation at Bayer’s main U.S. offices in Whippany, New Jersey, the company has now embarked on another remarkable solar power project at the Woodland site. These two new solar energy initiatives are specifically designed to not only reduce energy costs but also to promote sustainability and environmental consciousness. By investing in renewable energy solutions, Bayer is actively contributing to a greener future while simultaneously reaping the benefits of cost savings.

Both the Woodland solar power project and the solar installation at Bayer’s main U.S. offices in Whippany, New Jersey, are in perfect alignment with Bayer’s steadfast commitment to sustainability. As part of their ambitious goals, Bayer aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and establish a net-zero waste across its entire value chain by 2050. To accomplish these targets, which have received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative, Bayer has formulated a key strategy: procuring 100% sustainable renewable electricity by 2030. By prioritizing the adoption of renewable energy sources, Bayer is actively working towards a more sustainable future and setting a positive example for the industry.

Bayer has placed significant emphasis on harnessing energy efficiency and clean energy resources as key drivers in achieving its ambitious and science-based sustainability targets. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement’s objective of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, Bayer is committed to consistently reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions both within the company and throughout its entire value chain. By embracing renewable energy sources, which generate electricity without carbon emissions, Bayer is making substantial strides in minimizing its overall GHG footprint. This strategic approach plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change and advancing the company’s sustainability agenda.

“These solar installations serve as a powerful testament to our dedication in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, not only to our employees and customers but also to the communities in which we live and operate,” stated Delf Bintakies, Global Head of Safety, Security, Health, and Environment (SSHE) at Bayer. “Bayer has established stringent criteria for procuring green energy, which encompasses factors such as the proximity of energy production facilities to Bayer sites, the utilization of innovative sources of generation, and a strong emphasis on wind and solar power.” By adhering to these specific criteria, Bayer is actively promoting sustainable energy practices and reinforcing its commitment to a cleaner and greener future.
