The power procurement division of the Saudi Arabian government has issued a call for bids for a potential of up to 3 gigawatts (GW) of new solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity.
As part of the sixth round of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), the Saudi Power Procurement Company has initiated a request for proposals. This move aligns with the country’s goal of fulfilling 50% of its electricity demand from renewable sources by 2030.
The Round 6 projects collectively have a total capacity of 4.5 gigawatts (GW), comprising 3 gigawatts from photovoltaic (PV) sources and the remaining capacity from wind energy.
The solar segment of the tender round will be divided into four distinct projects: a 1.4 gigawatt (GWac) facility in Najran province, two 600 megawatt (MWac) facilities in Jizan province, and a 400 MWac project near As Sufun in Hail province.
SPPC is in charge of the predevelopment and tendering procedures and will ultimately serve as the off-taker for the electricity produced by the projects.
Earlier this year, the company disclosed the outcomes of its fifth tender round, which encompassed 3.7 gigawatts (GWac) of photovoltaic (PV) capacity. Thus far, SPPC has allocated a total of 19 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity through the NREP.
